About the Department

The Department of English was established as a major department in the academic year 2015-2016 under the affiliation of Thiruvalluvar university. It was upgraded into Postgraduate department in 2018. From the academic year 2021-2022 the college and course has been affiliated to Annamalai university.

The department offers bridge course for all the first year students and it also offers communicative English, effective communication as an add-on courses to the non-major students.

The department has good collection of books for English language and literature. In 2016 in order to broaden the field of literature, department of English founded the English literary Association of St.Ann’s (ELAS). The department involves third year UG students in industrial visit to develop their knowledge and skill in English Literature and Culture. With the constant support to our staff members many of our students have participated and won overall championships and prizes in various inter-collegiate literary meet. In addition to the traditional chalk and talk method, special interactive classes by applying group discussion, question-answer, demonstration method are arranged to encourage the students and to improve their learning. In- house activities organized frequently by the department to help the students acquire knowledge and self-confidence.

The Department of English is conducting special classes to the slow learners for the academic betterment of the slow learners. The hidden creativity of the students is manifested through the publication of wall Magazines in the classrooms. Interest is grown among the learners by showing them films on different dramas and novels in the syllabus.

From 2017 onwards, Department of English has been conducting an inter-collegiate literary meet in the name of SACAURA. Moreover, Drama, Slide Shows are arranged on various drama topics on the syllabus to create interest among the students to provide additional information in the literary arena.Graduated students. Being the humanitarian department, we also provide the knowledge based education with societal concern. St. Mother Teresa said, “erving the poor and the needy is equal to serving God”. In order to prove the words of Teresa our students are actively involving social services such as, donating blood , cleaning villages, planting saplings in public places, teaching school students and uneducated people in village.

We, the Department of English are working seriously to develop in the field of linguistics and its aspects along with the core knowledge of literature and communication.
We want to infuse creativity along with critical thinking.
The primary motive is to use English as a medium of language to tap the heart of commoners and to break the image that the spoken language is not a herculean task in terms of looking at the world in a majestic way.
We also are in plan to make that literature is not limited in language alone, it has to surpass beyond the human existence.
In near future we would like to make literature to reflect the societal concern and has to withstand the humanitarian effects in all possible ways.
We are working on the students to create the research attitude in their minds and by exploring the literature in a modern pursuit.
We aim to inculcate the diverged education in accordance with current scenario and also prepare our students as an active agent to wipe away the homogeneity which is giving the narrow minded thoughts.
Through education we would like to imply that the art is not alone in representing the stereotypical ideas but we would like to offer the art can also be extended in all domains.
The focal point of the Department is to provide the holistic education.

We are twisting the theoretical perspectives with practical ideas through the creative amalgamation.
We are paying attention to each individual with steady and gradual as an expectation prevalent in the society.
We are giving ample chances for students to evocate their incurrent talents to realize their potentialities.
Apart from the prescribed academic syllabus we are also imparting knowledge for them to face the competitive examination all across.
We are also striving our possible efforts in making our students to perceive their other activities related to the literature and its components by giving practices for them to go for competitions in various intercollegiate literary meets.
The crux of our department is to offer the knowledge based education than merely providing and education based for marks.
We the department have been steadily working in revelating the transition of the students from what they were to what they are.
